was slashed with an officer’s sword on his chin..

Following the war, he devoted much
of the rest of his life to fighting for the
rights of freed slaves, women and other
disfranchised peoples.

With the defeat of John Brown at
Harpers ferry all of the Secret 6 but
himself fled to Canada for fear of being arrested.
