THE MURDER OF CHILDREN
Birmingham’s 16th Street Church was bombed killing 4 girls and injuring many more. There was serious damage done to the church including the blowing out of all but one of the stained glass windows. The remaining window showed Jesus leading a group of children..
This act of terror marked a turning point in the 1960’s civil rights struggle and contributed to the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
The murdered girls were Addie Mae Collins (age 14); Denise McNair (age 11); Carole Robertson ( age 14) and Cynthia Wesley (age 14). Twenty-Two other people were injured in the bombing.
